Like its original inspiration, Nagraj Manjule’s Sairat, the facet of love trying to survive the cruel world of politics and ruthless societal pressure, makes Dhadak engaging. The film follows the Sairat template for most part, but it does change a few scenes and the setting. While it lacks the grit and detail of Manjule’s original, director Shashank Khaitan’s Hindi adaptation still makes for a compelling watch. Dhadak attempts to highlight some shocking truths about our society and for that it makes a worthy watch.

Khatter has a mobile, expressive face. He is a natural. Kapoor, though, has a hard time emoting. On their own, they each have a couple of scenes which they work: together, there is no zing, no `zingaaat’. There will be a modern contemporary Bollywood romance posting new frontiers on the caste-and-class front. Dhadak is not it.

But that definitely isn’t meant to be an inspiration for Dhadak to shrug off its inertia. The film saunters rather than sprints. In Sairat, that strategy clicked famously because that film had its heart in the right place. Dhadak doesn’t. The result is a grind that pretty frames and fresh faces cannot mitigate.

Actually, what hampers Dhadak the most is the pressure to look striking. This becomes really funny when Ishaan and Janhvi are expected to lead a tough, middle class life in Kolkata.

There are good tunes thrown in between but they don’t serve the purpose as Dhadak, overall, barely skims beyond the obvious. At 137-minute duration, it’s not as powerful as the original, but could be a good watch for audiences looking for decent fresh faces.

Dhadak comes in with the greatest disadvantage of people knowing the shocking elements of the film. I knew where will happen what & hence was prepared for the shocks. There are some changes but the major ones remain the same. All said and done, Dhadak is the heartbeat of love! Supremely performed by Ishaan & Janhvi, this would be go down in the list of remakes well made. Shashank Khaitan has another winner under his belt.
Three and a half stars!
