Audaciously crafted and cleverly written, Deadpool 2 has the ability to end the Avengers’ reign at the box office. Credit goes to the writers for ensuring that the constant wisecracks, digs at other superheroes or pop culture references, don’t distract a viewer from the story’s emotional core and it’s protagonist’s moral ambiguity. The actor-writer surpasses his own 2016 outing with this smashing sequel that has its heart and humour in the right place.

It is all too confusing in the beginning, and much too smart at times — again — for its own good. But as Ryan Reynolds gets other people to match his wits against, Deadpool 2 starts hitting the spots it wants too, much more effortlessly than its prequel.

Too many people die in Deadpool 2. That seems to be the theme for superhero movies this summer, after the carnage of Avengers Infinity War, though the death in this sequel is both more stylish and, surprisingly, more heartfelt. As the opening credits of Deadpool 2 say, offering precious context, the movie is indeed “directed by one of the guys who killed the dog in John Wick.”

Deadpool 2 is more violent than the first movie. It’s also way filthier, magnificently tone-deaf and utterly relentless in the sodden path that it has chosen to walk. I liked it better than the first film, but in the interest of absolute honesty, I must confess that I wasn’t quite as taken by the first Deadpool as you lot seemed to have been. So I walked into Deadpool 2 fully prepared to feel left out, like Hawkeye in Avengers: Infinity War. Ignored. But I was in for the most unpleasantly pleasant surprise.

All said and done, Deadpool 2 will make you laugh you heart out and it’ll play with the emotions of it. PLEASE WAIT for the post credits scenes, there’s a lot happening in them. Expect whatever you want to, I’m sure you’ll come back enjoying more than that.

Four stars!
