Marvel has accumulated tremendous power with their decade-old series of films. They’ve broken box office records. They’ve changed blockbuster moviemaking forever. They’ve made stars out of unknown actors. With these films, they’ve brought to life what old fans could only dream of, and they’ve given a new generation idols to look up to. These aren’t small achievements. But with this power, they also had a responsibility – to make good movies. It doesn’t sound like too much to ask, but sometimes, it can be.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of the good ones. Like Peter, there is earnestness in its heart. No Spidey movie can come close to the greatness of Spider-Man 2, but this one swings right up to its face.

This movie marks a big a moment for Holland, who, for the first time in his career, has to carry a gigantic blockbuster and does so handily. As Peter, he will remind you of your childhood best friend and, as the movie unfurls, become a hero to look up to. Quite simply, Homecoming proves that Holland is a star and the best Spider-Man we’ve seen onscreen.

Holland, a dancer and acrobat who headlined on the London stage in Elton John’s Billy Elliot: The Musical, moves with an athlete’s natural grace. It’s Holland who makes us care, not to mention that he did nearly 90 percent of the stunts. This is a star performance given by a born actor (check him out in The Impossible and The Lost City of Z). Spider-Man soars because Holland gives him wings.
