The hagiographic narrative continues with commentators, critics and colleagues–Dhoni, Kohli, Ganguly, Sehwag and Harbhajan are (sigh!) only eulogizing the Little Master.

Academically though this film is important one because for a nation that revers cricket, it serves as a reminder that prodigies may be born, but they become Sachin Tendulkar only through perseverance, patience and preparation. Go India go.

For a movie made as a fulsome tribute, the challenge is always going to be to keep someone who is not bananas about the game (which includes your faithful critic) to stay with the film: I did, and enjoyed almost every minute of it, cheering at the World Cup win, blinking back tears at Sachin’s farewell speech, even while asking for more.

Sachin speaks about the Greg Chappell regime also, but doesn’t say anything more than what’s already known. He is always conscious.

Having said that, Sachin A Billion Dreams still works to a good extent, because, well, it’s Sachin Tendulkar. The man who made us cry during his last speech at Wankhede Stadium.

I wiped my eyes when the same footage played inside the theatre, I won’t deny that, but that’s mostly because of the nostalgia attached to my teens. It’s reliving the Sachin magic, not a perfect docu-drama on him. Still enough to bring you to the theatres. We have been doing it for years. Maybe one more time.

A R Rahman’s musical score is thumping and keeps the film’s pace up. The Sachin anthem is reverberating and one of the best moments is Rahman’s Vande Mataram being played to the iconic 2011 World Cup win post Dhoni’s winning sixer. Sachin:A Billion Dreams is a treat for Sachin Tendulkar fans. It’s realistic, emotional and highly inspiring. It will probably make you miss him even more on field! A 4/5 for this.
