The first half indulges the protagonist and her love interest, Jai too much. It is only post-intermission, especially the last 35 minutes in which proceedings pick up. Sticking to a typical-action drama narrative that jumps from Mumbai to Goa, Vienna to Kuala Lumpur, with the arms dealer and the ISI agents playing a cat-and-mouse game, the film, is more an escapist fare than a realistic one.
Taapsee delivers some knockout punches and is sincere enough. Manoj is brilliant, though he has just dialogue-baazi and no action to support him. As for Akshay, he is happy to lend his superstar-presence and bask in the girl power. So go ahead and salute his spirit.

The problem is the plot. Or, more precisely, the lack of it. There’s a great deal of to-ing and fro-ing, from cool European cities to tropical desi locations, as the gang of spies, headed by Manoj Bajpayee’s chief, goes after a global arms kingpin who is also involved in trafficking and drugs. But you are left looking for a pulsing storyline in a film which is meant to focus upon the smarts of its leading lady, which, instead, gives us such unintentionally hilarious lines as: ‘women are born spies’. Or words to that effect.

This isn’t a one-woman show. Shabana’s cocky senior Ajay Singh Rajput often takes the spotlight away from her. The character is after all played by a much bigger star. Granted that Naam Shabana takes a risk by building an action-packed tale around a woman. But the film is forced to hedge its bets by letting the Akshay Kumar cameo get bigger than cameos are usually meant to be. What’s in a name, anyways? It might be Naam Shabana, but the rules of the box-office game are eventually immutable.Naam Shabana, for all its avowed aspirations, it rarely ventures beyond the trite and tested. Watch it only if standard-fare action dramas do not put you off.

One hundred and fourty eight minutes long, Naam Shabana pans out like an uneventful bus ride. You know everything, from the time the bus will arrive, to the route it will take, the stops it will halt at and of course the dull end to an everyday journey. We have seen it all, and sadly Shabana can break all the bones she wants but the stereotypes remain unscathed. Naam Shabana gets a very generous 2.5 QUINTS out of 5. Nothing new and strictly average!

Although I couldn’t help wondering that when Shabana’s mom is fretting about what her hot-headed daughter is up to, becoming a spy is a rosy and unrealistic scenario, when the reality of our day is that some Muslim youngsters are departing to join ISIS.

Any takeaways from this film? That’s a hard one. Were there meant to be any?

You can delve and come up with not much. I mean it is simply an action film, so bro, what message can you go looking for!?

Yet it is an aspirational film. Because the Naam Shabana India, though pretty close to what we have today, has still elements of the India we want to be.
