Shashank clearly establishes that Vaidehi is a hero – she takes tough decisions in the pursuit of her dreams.  But he also gives us a hero who learns the true definition of masculinity. It isn’t the toxic aggression that his overbearing father preaches. It’s the strength to respect her choices. Of course the story stays simplistic and sunny – when Vaidehi breaks the rules, there are disturbing threats of violence but the darkness dispels quickly. Which is not a bad thing.  Think of Badrinath ki Dulhania as a dose of feminism-lite. I was smiling through the film

Together, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt are the best thing that could have happened to our screens. The beautiful effortlessness of their onscreen companionship plasters a grin on your face. Dhawan as Badri is adorable; you instantly take to him. He even pulls off some high-drama scenes impressively. Bhatt, unsurprisingly, gives it her all, and her sincerity comes through. But her accent, casually swinging between Juhu and Jhansi, is bothersome at times.
RSVP Yes to this wedding; it’s grand, with good music, great people and delicious food for thought.

There are some portions which are bunged in as set-pieces, instead of moving organic parts. A couple of times, the film’s let’s hear-it-for-the-ladies comes off as a simplistic flourish. But overall, the film works as a flavoursome romance with a pair which grows into each other, and with each other. I’m happy to cheer any film which tacks on the word ‘respect’ with ‘love’, and does a climactic take-down of patriarchy, even if its all broad brush-strokey and dialogue heavy.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania has its moments, especially the comic ones. Dhawan and Vaid show impeccable timing, but overall the film belongs to Alia Bhatt.

This film may not offer a substantial take on any cause, but it is one of the many that take the debate forward. Being mainstream will only help it.

On the whole, BADRINATH KI DULHANIA is a beautifully textured love story and an enjoyable entertainer that wins you over and keeps you hooked right till the end. At the Box-Office, it will be a sure-shot success. Do not miss it.

As with all films where the intent outweighs the product, this is a film best looked on with a touch of indulgence. As part of his nightly ritual, the elder brother sits on the roof of the Jhansi house and drinks whisky by himself.

One evening, when Badri unexpectedly pops up to join him, there is already another glass up there, waiting to be poured into. This certainly feels like an obvious continuity error, and probably is one, but maybe, just maybe, there’s another way to look at it. Maybe the elder brother had been waiting for a bit of company.

When it comes to films like this, I know what I’d rather believe. Here’s to hope.
