Suriya, who carries the entire film on his shoulders, is in full form — Duraisingam looks as intense, brave and energetic as he appeared more than six years ago. This time, too, his mission ends leaving a hint that the franchise is here to stay. Director Hari’s consistency in handling cop stories convincingly and entertainingly needs to be commended as he has been proving his expertise repeatedly. It is a known fact that Hari has been following a template in many of his films — a ferocious hero, a separate comedy track, a glamour song (if it were Anjali in Singam 2 and Andrea in Poojai, it is Neetu Chandra who the hero shakes a leg with), and so on. However, this drawback is trivial as these elements continue to impress the masses.

It is Singam’s show all the way. If Hari ever wants to reload the franchise with a new actor, well, good luck with that. It is virtually impossible to find an actor who can pull off this role with the conviction and commitment like Suriya. It is difficult for the audience to even image any other actor in the shoes of Durai Singam.

We have heroes, but no worthy villains. The last one was Prakashraj – he had the stature, the presence, the voice, the wonderful hamminess he knew just exactly how much to dial up and down. But after he got stereotyped and overexposed, our filmmakers have been searching for a replacement. They continue searching. Then again, the Singam series is the last place to be complaining about the villain. One, it’s all about the hero, who’s lauded in India as “the most powerful officer,” and in Australia as “the universal cop.” Plus, given Hari’s filmmaking, he may not even need a villain in Singam 4. He could do a fast-forward mashup of the previous instalments, and we’d never be able to tell the difference.

Director Hari’s grip in handling action episodes with high technical strength and extracting best output from heroes has helped this movie too. After “Yamudu”, Suriya has shown high energy now.

All in all, “Singam 3” works due to never-a-dull-moment in the second half, Surya’s excellent and fab performance and Hari’s racy narration. This is paisa vasool for Singam lovers.
